Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has unveiled his blueprint to reignite the initial cypherpunk spirit within the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain. Titled “Make Ethereum Cypherpunk Again,” his recent blog post outlines crucial improvements to restore Ethereum’s founding ideals.
Buterin underscores Ethereum’s original purpose as a decentralized, shared hard drive capable of peer-to-peer messaging and file storage. He laments that the protocol’s trajectory veered away from these ideals towards financialization in 2017.
The resurgence of cypherpunk values within Ethereum aims at reinforcing decentralization, open participation, resistance to censorship, and impartial neutrality. Buterin applauds the integration of rollups, zero-knowledge proofs, account abstraction, and privacy solutions that align with these fundamental values.
Acknowledging Ethereum’s vulnerability to exploitation and hacks, Buterin refers to the platform as a “dark forest” for on-chain traders. He hails developments like decentralized exchanges (DEX) such as Cowswap, Flashbots Protect, and MEV Blocker for enhancing user protection against “sandwich attacks.”
Users expressed support for Buterin’s plan, particularly regarding cryptocurrency payments for retail clients, an aspect that hasn’t received significant attention previously. Some likened Buterin’s statement to the strategy used in the campaign of former U.S. President Donald Trump, even proposing a new token, MEGA (Make Ethereum Great Again), in support of Ethereum.
In a lighter vein, influencer Ignas from DeFi Research teased about the decentralized ecosystem, sharing a picture of Buterin alongside Justin Sun, the founder of Tron, humorously implying that the most decentralized ecosystem seat has been occupied.
Buterin envisions Ethereum as a core component of a more open internet stack, emphasizing the early concept of ‘web3’ as a paradigm shift in defining Ethereum’s role in shaping a more transparent and accessible internet infrastructure.
